A couple hours north of St. A is Beaufort (pr: Byoo-fort), SC. A super cute small town with nice shops and restaurants, surrounded by water. I couldn't tell you what body of water it is, but it's not oceanfront. It's inland with marsh and rivers all around. We were only there for two nights but did quite a bit for our short time there.
Thursday we checked in to our Airbnb and walked downtown. We meandered around a bit then got dinner at Paninis on the Waterfront (it was ok). We explored some more then stopped for a drink at Old Bull Tavern before heading back. Old Bill Tavern seems to be the place to be, by the way!
Friday we got coffee and breakfast at Urban Brew (LOVED their Dress Blues smoothie - got it Saturday am too), then headed down to Port Royal area and checked out Sands Beach and the Spanish Moss Trail. Sands Beach doesn't have waves and I don't think you can go in the water either... so we didn't stay long. We then rented bikes and road a few miles on the Spanish Moss Trail. Highly recommend doing this! It is really a lovely, well maintained, paved trail. The trail takes you through an old train station of some sort, and shows off the surrounding neighborhoods and marsh areas.
By the time we finished riding, we were pretty hungry which took us to Fishcamp (a lovely restaurant on the water... but no beers on tap). Thankfully Shellring Ale Works was right next door. They have a really cool campus and a delicious Pale Ale.
Things I would do next time we go:
Walking history tour
Kayak rentals
Visit Hunting Island State Park
